What can I expect from my first therapy session?
Your first session is all about getting to know each other. We’ll take time to discuss your goals, concerns, and what brings you to therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the process, and we’ll explore together how we can best work together to meet your needs. Our approach is warm, supportive, and collaborative, ensuring you feel heard and understood from the very beginning.
How long are therapy sessions?
Each session typically lasts 50 minutes, though we can discuss longer or shorter sessions, as needed. The duration and frequency of therapy sessions will depend on your individual needs and goals, and can be adjusted as you progress in your journey.
What does medical necessity mean?
"Medical necessity" refers to the criteria that a treatment or therapy must meet to be considered appropriate, effective, and required to treat a specific medical condition. In the context of therapy, it means that the services provided are necessary to diagnose, treat, or prevent a mental health condition, improve your well-being, or manage symptoms in a way that helps you lead a healthier, more functional life.
Insurance companies and healthcare providers often require that therapy be deemed "medically necessary" in order for the costs to be covered. This typically involves demonstrating that:
The therapy is for a diagnosable condition: There must be a recognized mental health issue, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or other psychological concerns.
The therapy is effective: The treatment approach must be based on evidence that it can help improve symptoms or address the condition.
The therapy is appropriate: It must be suitable for your particular situation, considering your individual needs and the severity of your condition.
Essentially, therapy is considered medically necessary when it is deemed crucial for improving your mental health and quality of life. The goal is to help you feel better, function more effectively, and manage any challenges you're facing in a way that leads to long-term improvement.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes! Confidentiality is one of the core principles of therapy. Everything you share in sessions is kept private, with the following exceptions:
If there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.
If required by law (e.g., in cases of child abuse or neglect).
If you sign a release to share information with another medical professional or family member.
You’ll always be informed and involved in any decisions regarding confidentiality.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to move forward in any area of your life—therapy can help. Therapy is for anyone who wants to improve their emotional well-being, gain clarity, or build healthier relationships. It’s also a great space for self-discovery and personal growth. If you're uncertain, we're happy to schedule an initial consultation where we can discuss your needs and how therapy can support you.
